About

My artwork reflects my experiences surrounding cultural identity. In the efforts of highlighting the cultural consciousness and shared experiences of being Asian in America, I start by depicting my own personal narrative of being a westernized Chinese woman in America. I believe that in my childhood, moving frequently from one country to the next, translates to how I compose artwork in an environment. The feeling of displacement shapes a world that I want to belong in and recognize. In turn, my work is my individuality; a melting pot of my Chinese, British, and American identities.

Contrasting and opposing forces are used as an underlying theme throughout my color choices, forms, and exploration in materials. Exploration with contrasting materials illustrates the divergence in the individual’s perception based on their personal experiences. My process involves laborious art making such as hand cut patterns into Chinese satin fabric, mimicking the design that already exists; and large amounts of ceramic pieces that assemble to a whole.

The central theme in the materials I use, my process, and my content demonstrate how the whole equals the sum of its parts, just like how identities are constructed. All these are parts of a formula in creating my large-scale installations. Repetition and pattern have a powerful presence in my art work. I investigate what “Chinese American” looks like outside of the human form, in formulating my aesthetic style, and finding the patterns of how stereotyping has been repeated throughout history between the East and the West.
